Pittsburgh officials ended a pilot program with Zipcar, a private car-sharing service.
An e-mail from the Finance Department told city employees "no further reservations will be authorized or paid from this program" after today. They were instructed to rely on vehicles in the city's motor pool.
The e-mail from Bob Yakich, a finance manager, did not say why the city is ending the program.
In 2007, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl touted a one-year, pilot agreement with Flexcar, which later became Zipcar after a merger, as a way of reducing the size of the city's fleet and saving money. City Council approved spending $10,000 on the program. It's unclear whether the city saved any money. Joanna Doven, a spokeswoman for Ravenstahl, did not respond to a phone call or e-mail seeking comment.
