Pittsburgh police officer shoots robbery suspect on South Side
A suspected bank robber was shot this evening by a city policeman after a brief chase that ended on a dead-end street in the South Side.
The shooting occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of Jane Street when a police officer radioed emergency dispatchers, saying that he shot the suspect after the man tried to run over his partner with a car.
Pittsburgh police did not immediately release details of the shooting, but Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said the man was shot in the shoulder and that his wound does not appear to be life-threatening.
Several officers identified the wounded man as a suspect in a bank robbery earlier in the day in Penn Hills.
The shooting startled a number of residents who were sitting outside their homes in the normally quiet neighborhood.
“I saw a car driving by real fast and a police van chasing it,” said Marianne Holohan, 28. “Then I heard a series of gunshots…about seven, more than just a few.”
Lisa Bobyn, 36, and Kendra Keiffer, 35, were sitting with several children when they saw police pull the motorist over at the corner of South 27th and Jane streets.
“We saw the cop van pull the red car over and then heard a cop say, ‘Hey! Stop!’ and the red car sped down the street toward the dead end. Then we heard about six shots fired,” Bobyn said.
