Pittsburgh police responding to calls for suspicious packages, no explosives found
A pressure cooker mailed to a North Side office was one of several reports of suspicious packages Pittsburgh police investigated on Wednesday in the aftermath of the fatal bombings at the Boston Marathon.
Officers received a call just before noon that a suspicious package had been mailed to an office building on North Point Drive. An employee on the fourth floor told police that a box labeled “pressure cooker” was mailed there with a Massachusetts return address.
Office workers were concerned, police Lt. Shirley Sloan said. The bomb squad responded, but by the time it arrived, an employee at a company that recently moved into the building had claimed the cooker, Sloan said.
“He said, ‘Yes, we did order a pressure cooker in the mail,’ ” Sloan said. “The fact that it’s a pressure cooker — it’s making people more aware. We’d rather be safe than sorry.”
No one was evacuated from the building.
A maintenance man at the Target store on Penn Avenue in East Liberty called 911 about 1:15 p.m. because he thought the amount of recyclables someone dropped off was suspicious, Lt. Reyne Kacsuta said.
Police reviewed surveillance video with store management, who recognized the woman who dropped off the recyclables as a frequent customer, Kacsuta said. Police determined the items were not suspicious.
“If people think things are suspicious, they should call us,” Kacsuta said.
In another incident, someone reported an unattended box left on Negley Avenue near Fifth Avenue in Shadyside just before 10 a.m. Police detonated the box, which contained shoes and clothes, police said.
A portion of Leechburg Road in Lower Burrell was closed on Wednesday after someone discovered what turned out to be an old television picture tube in a Dollar Tree parking lot.
The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called. Its members determined the device was not an explosive.
