Pittsburgh Public Schools bus driver suspended

A Pittsburgh Public Schools bus driver was suspended Thursday, a day after dropping a special needs kindergarten student off at his home but not staying to make sure the child was met by family or safely inside.

The 6-year-old boy, who lives in Knoxville and attends Manchester K-8, was found about 90 minutes later on Brownsville Road in Carrick by city police, school personnel said.

Bonnie Bastian, a spokeswoman for the bus company, Cinncinnati-based First Student Inc., said the driver dropped the child off at 4 p.m. The boy's parents called the company about 30 minutes later to say he had not arrived home, Bastian said.

City school spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the driver could not see the door to the child's home from the alley where he gets off the bus. The driver said he has never seen a parent or guardian in the yard.

Four other bus drivers, including one hired by Pittsburgh Cares for a field trip to Carnegie Science Center, have been accused of endangering city students since October.
