City school board members Wednesday approved closing Peabody High School and reconfiguring three East End Schools by 2011-12 in a 8-0 vote. Board member Mark Brentley abstained.

Peabody students and Faison and Lincoln sixth- through eighth-graders will move to Westinghouse High School or University Prep 6-12 at Milliones.

The students can choose their school, but the board approved a new feeder pattern, divided down Negley Avenue, for those who don't pick.

Westinghouse will become a 6-12 school with two single-gender academies, and the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies will move to Peabody in 2012-13.

The board also approved an early college model for Oliver High School with career and technical education and an extended day and year calendar, as well as opening teacher training academies at King K-8 and Brashear High School.
