Fierce competition is expected along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail on July 14 for the Friends of the Riverfront Pittsburgh Triathlon.

The event is expected to attract thousands of people to the shores of the Allegheny River, to compete in the Olympic-distance triathlon.

At the urging of Pittsburgh City Councilman Alan Hertzberg, a triathlon — swim, bike, run — was added to the schedule last year.

"Our objective is to get people interested in the spot but also to hold an event which will challenge world-class triathletes. Pittsburgh has some of the best terrain for hosting a competitive triathlon, which makes it an easy choice for those who want a challenge," Hertzberg said.

Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy and Allegheny County Councilman Dave Fawcett are co-sponsoring the event with Hertzberg.

Proceeds benefit Friends of the Riverfront, an organization dedicated to the development of the area's riverfront and expansion of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.

The activities begin on July 13, on Mazeroski Way near PNC Park, where participants can pick up registration packets, view the course and enjoy a pre-race pasta bar from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
