Please rethink idea of ‘Top Ten Stories’
To the Editor,
I am writing this letter in reference to the full page ad last week you ran for…your readers to pick the “Top Ten News Stories of 2010.”
I guess the redundance of this article over the years did not hit me until a family member was included in one of the articles to be voted on.
My brother was shot and killed at Westgate Manor in August of this year. The story was played over, and over and over again on the television, the Internet and the newspapers. It made my entire family sick to see it may be exploited once again.
This was an unfortunate incident that had ended three peoples lives and had instantly thrown two families into the state of shock. As usual, the media ran this story into the ground….This is sickening. When will the media wise up and be a little more compassionate when it comes to stories like this?…
Everyday you see stories on the TV and the newspapers bothering the families after such tragedies have happened to them….When my brother was killed at Westgate, the television people were hiding beside buildings behind the police tape so they could get a good picture of the crime scene and the grieving families….
Shame on you!
Hope this never happens to you….Instead of running the Top Ten stories, why not make it into something like the Top Ten POSITIVE Stories?
But, then again, it probably wouldn’t sell as many newspapers as the tragic stories would.
My family has suffered terribly since this incident and will relive it through the rest of our lives….We do not need it to be voted on and run again in the paper….This is very disturbing to me and my family members….We do not need another media circus.
I really did not want to write this letter because I, myself, am bringing attention to my brother’s death.
But I just had to address this for my brother’s and family’s sake.
Please, readers, do not vote for the Westgate shooting/suicide story as one of the Top Ten stories for 2010.
Please put this story to rest and let my brother rest in peace!
