Plum adopts revisions to ‘controlled substances’ policy
Plum Borough School District has a new policy with a new name to address substance abuse.
The school board on Tuesday night adopted revisions to the district’s drug and alcohol policy. One of the most noteworthy revisions is the new title for the policy — controlled substances.
“I’m glad we are being proactive rather than reactive,” board member Rena Lynn Koteski, policy committee chairwoman said Wednesday.
The revisions to the policy came about as a result of the work of the drug and alcohol task force — an arm of the Safe Schools Committee.
The task force was created last summer to analyze four areas: policy, curriculum, education and resources and make recommendations for improvements in those areas.
District officials said the policy was in need of revisions.
“It was dated,” said Lillian Naccarati, Plum’s director of student personnel.
In particular, the revised policy addresses the modern trends of steroid and inhalant use.
