A Plum man remains in Westmoreland County Prison after being charged in the August burglary of a Penn Township jewelry store.

John Scafuri, of 2044 E. Holiday Park Drive, was charged Jan. 23 with burglary, criminal conspiracy, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief in conjunction with the Aug. 16 burglary of Valmax Jewelers, at the Penn Crossing Shopping Plaza.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Penn Township police and Westmoreland County detectives, the items stolen were valued at about $25,000. Police were called to the store at about 5:30 a.m. as a burglar alarm sounded and found the front door window broken.

Police said five jewelry cases were smashed and numerous pieces of jewelry were taken. A witness told police two men ran out of the store and into a vehicle before fleeing.

The criminal complaint stated Scafuri told his girlfriend that he was involved in the robbery of a jewelry store and showed her jewelry from the heist.

He allegedly told police he and another man put on masks, smashed out the front glass window and took jewelry from glass cases they smashed with a hammer.

Penn Township police said additional arrests are pending.

Bond for Scafuri was set at $25,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Feb. 10 before Penn Township District Judge Helen Kistler.
