Plum Borough School District officials believe their revamped website will help improve communication, particularly with parents and residents on the go.
“We wanted the new website to be more responsive to mobile devices,” Assistant Superintendent Guy Rossi said via email.
“In addition, it was important to us to make it easier for our parents and community to find events and other important information. The calendar and announcements sections will be updated regularly to include important dates and information.”
Chris Burkey, district director of educational technology, explained that the site, pbsd.k12.pa.us, went live with its new design July 15.
“It has been tweaked a few times since then to get the overall design correct,” Burkey said. “We have been using eSchoolView for our website for the past several years. (The upgrades are) based on a responsive design, this means that the content that is displayed on the screen is adjusted to fit the size of the screen. This all comes from the same website design so mobile users have better continuity between computer, tablet and smartphone.”
Burkey said the necessary changes have been welcomed by district staff and residents.
“So far feedback has been very good,” he said. “The community isn't as active on the website during the summer months so the last few weeks in August and first few weeks of September will be the true test. We were very unhappy with the user experience our mobile users were having. We wanted to make sure that no matter how you accessed our website that you could get to the information you needed as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
The home page's layout includes tabs titled District, Alumni, Contact, Departments, Schools, School Board, Programs and Resources just above a cropped photo of the Mustangs football field, and tabs for Athletics, Employment, Lunch Menus, Parent Portal, Registration and Plum Connect just below that photo.
A link to the district's incident reporting system TIPS — Threat Assessment, Incident Management and Prevention Services — is on the home page, as well as under the Resources tab.
The TIPS system is intended to facilitate, via email or telephone, the reporting of sensitive information to school officials, including information regarding student safety, substance abuse or potential threats to individuals or district facilities.
