Pittsburgh seniors have a new choice for a checking account.
PNC Bank on Monday introduced the Senior Checking Plan for those 50 years or older, which features no monthly service charge or minimum balance requirement. The account also provides free savings and money-market accounts.
PNC is planning to promote Senior Checking through print advertisements beginning Wednesday, said Dan Tucillo, senior vice president of product marketing.
Those over 50 represent the largest slice of bank customers in most, if not all, of the markets served by PNC, he said. The bank introduced Senior Checking at its more than 700 branches in six states on June 3.
The bank account also offers a free PNC debit card, free stop-payment orders on checks and free set-up for overdraft protection and for online banking.
Parkvale Bank has offered a checking account to seniors for several years. Called 50-Plus Checking, the accounts require no monthly fee or minimum balance. The account does not charge a fee for new checks.
National City Bank targets seniors with a combination plan, called Premium Interest Checking Plus, for those at least 50 years old. It features free online banking and bill-paying, extra interest paid on certain deposit accounts and discounted rates on certain loans. The monthly service fee is waived if account holders have direct deposit or direct payment, or maintain a balance of $2,500 or more.
Citizens Bank offers the Senior Citizens Checking account to those 62 and older. The account carries no monthly maintenance fees or minimum-balance requirements, unlimited check writing and free replacement checks, said spokesman Mike Jones.
