Police respond to another shooting in McKeesport's Crawford Village

Allegheny County's week of fatal and near-fatal shootings continued overnight.

A McKeesport man was slain while celebrating his 30th birthday in Wilkinsburg, while another shooting injured a man at a McKeesport housing complex where three people were killed this week during a separate birthday bash, authorities said.

Around 3:10 a.m. today, police responded to a call of a person down with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot at the Crawford Village housing complex, county emergency dispatchers said. McKeesport police confirmed that a suspect is in custody but declined further comment.

Family members identified the victim as Artimus "Timy" Nowlin, 21. He was shot in the head and leg, authorities said. A spokesman at Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side said Nowlin is in critical condition.

Catherine Lee, 56, said she woke up and heard the gunshots. She found her cousin on the ground outside Building 43.

"All I saw was the blood coming out of his head and the gunshot in his leg," Lee said. "He was trying to get up, but I told him to stay down."

Five years ago Lee said she held Nowlin's brother as he died in her arms following another shooting in Crawford Village.

"We need protection. We need patrol. And we need it all the way around, 24-7," Lee said. "There are too many killings up here, and it has to stop."

Yesterday in Wilkinsburg, James Johnson, 30, was shot in the back around 5:30 p.m. outside a home on Ross Avenue. Johnson was pronounced dead at UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland. An autopsy is scheduled this morning at the county morgue. Police detained a suspect last night for questioning.

County police are assisting in both shootings. Neither county nor Wilkinsburg police could be reached for comment.

Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, two gunman forced their way into a birthday party at Crawford Village and fatally shot three people. A fourth person was injured during the shooting.

Police this morning arrested a man in connection with that incident.

In other local shootings this week:

• A man underwent surgery Tuesday after being shot in the abdomen during a drive-by shooting in Allentown.

• A man was taken to UPMC Mercy, Uptown, Tuesday night after being shot in the chest in the Hill District.

• A McKeesport man died Wednesday morning in Duquesne in what police initially described as a car-jacking. A Pittsburgh man was hospitalized after suffering multiple gunshot wounds during the incident.

• A Sharpsburg man died yesterday after being shot multiple times inside his car in East Liberty.
