Indian actor Nandamuri Balakrishna and his wife were acquitted of any role in the shooting of a film producer and his assistant, the BBC reported Friday.

A judge in the southern city of Hyderabad cleared the couple citing insufficient evidence following a two-month hearing. That came after the two injured individuals - producer Bellamkonda Suresh and his assistant, Satyanarayana Chowdhary -- retracted their statements and refused to cooperate with the prosecution.

The son of a former chief minister, Balakrishna was accused of attempted murder in the shooting of Suresh and Chowdhary. They were injured in the actor's Hyderabad home last June.

Balakrishna's wife was charged with destroying evidence.

Hyderabad city police commissioner, V Dinesh Reddy, expects to make a detailed assessment of the case before deciding if it will go to a higher court.
