The U.S. Postal Service announced today that it will close the mail processing center in Youngwood to save $2.5 million annually, officials said.
Operations will move to the mail processing center on Pittsburgh's North Side, according to Postmaster Curtis Williams.
The closure will mean 19 fewer jobs, although postal officials said in December that Youngwood workers will be offered jobs at other locations.
"After review, we have decided these consolidations are in the best interest of the U.S. Postal Service and will result in significant savings," Williams said.
"I want to assure you that the community's input was valued and carefully considered before making this decision. Ultimately, based on all the factors involved, it was determined to proceed with the consolidation."
The Youngwood facility is one of 11 mail processing centers that will close in Pennsylvania as part of an overall plan to close 200 nationwide. The closures are coupled with plans to close or consolidate 667 post offices across the country in an effort to save the agency $3 billion.
