Once again, scant coverage of the suburbs results in the media’s failure to completely articulate the issues as they are. For example, the school board race in Upper St. Clair was depicted as a referendum on the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. It was not. Eliminating IB against the superintendent’s recommendation and the community’s wishes was just the salvo in a barrage of bad decisions, poor management practices, misguided attempts to ban books, inappropriate harassment of staff, parents and students, and a purposeful failure to focus on education instead of rhetoric. When officials abuse their power and lose touch with the people they represent, they and their surrogates lose elections. Linda Tanzini AmbrosoUpper St. Clair
