Kudos to the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

My 15-year-old son and I had a fantastic week of summer camp at Heritage Reservation in Farmington. The council's professional staff and volunteer leadership never cease to amaze me!

How many other organizations successfully engage young people, giving them the practical knowledge and hands-on skills to become lifelong community leaders• In a world that glorifies narcissism, rewards individual gain, parodies duty and banks on conformity, Scouting stresses service to others and teamwork, instills personal responsibility and trades on character.

We could go a long way toward solving many community problems by putting into practice the Scout Law's traits: "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent."
