Property owners get extra day for discount

Property owners will have until Monday — an extra day beyond the June 30 deadline — to pay their Allegheny County property taxes at a discounted rate and avoid a penalty.

"Because Sunday is a holiday, we will be taking walk-ins and postmarks through Monday," said Deputy Treasurer Tom Bradley. Taxes paid by Monday will receive a 2-percent discount.

Taxes paid after that date will be assessed with an immediate 5-percent delinquent fee, in addition to 1-percent interest for each month the bill is unpaid. Delinquent notices are mailed by the treasurer's office on Aug. 10.

Normally, taxpayers would have another month to pay their taxes without penalty, but Bradley said that period was eliminated, in part because tax deadlines are two months late this year from the standoff over the 2002 reassessment between county Executive Jim Roddey and Democratic lawmakers on county council.

Bradley said the county already has received about $185 million in property taxes, with another $97 million still due.

Tax bills can be paid at Treasurer John Weinstein's office in the county Courthouse, Downtown, or through the mail at 106 County Courthouse, 436 Grant St., Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

Taxes also can be paid online using a credit cards at http://www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/realestate/payonlinecover.asp , which describes how the program works. There is an additional fee to pay taxes online.
