Plans for a new public safety building at Shady Drive East and Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon are on schedule. Assistant Manager Marcia Taylor said at a commissioners’ meeting Monday that Tedco Construction Corp., the project’s construction manager, expects to have bid information prepared in the fall. Ground-breaking would be before the end of the year. Taylor said Mt. Lebanon officials will meet with Tedco officials next week to discuss an up-to-date cost estimate for the project. ‘The process is going forward,’ said Fire Chief Steve Darcangelo. Darcangelo said the building’s electrical and data systems are being mapped out and that the process of determining the location of walls and offices is nearly complete. The 38,000-square-foot facility has an expected completion date of late summer 2002. Also, the municipality is planning to purchase two new fire trucks from Precision Fire Apparatus Co. for $727,354. Darcangelo said there are three options to finance the purchase. The fire department can apply for a federal grant in the amount of $150,000. They will, however, be competing with 32,000 other fire departments for the money. The state offers 2 percent interest loans for the purchase of fire equipment. And leasing the trucks would reduce the borough’s finance charge from 6 percent to 10 percent, if the trucks were purchased up front, to about 4.5 percent.
