It was fight night in Monessen on Saturday and it lured a big crowd to the city's Civic Center.

Fourteen bouts were on the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League Golden Gloves card, but it was the main event - the only match featuring a fighter from the Mid-Mon Valley - that most interested the crowd.

Sammy Vasquez, who's affiliated with Shraders Boxing in Monessen, rose to the occasion, easily defeating Lou Zaccarelli in the second round.

That battle between a pair of 152-pounders was a tuneup for the upcoming Eastern Regionals in Cleveland.

The next big fight night in Monessen will be June 23, when the card will feature mostly local boxers.
