Police have released a composite sketch of a man who attacked and raped a 60-year-old Shaler resident this week as she walked to the drugstore.

The woman remained hospitalized Friday night with head injuries and bruises to the back and legs, Shaler police detective Rick Byers said.

The attack occurred at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday in an alley that runs parallel to the 900 block of Mt. Royal Boulevard. Residents of a nearby senior citizens high rise often walk the alley to get to the drugstore so they can avoid the heavy traffic on Mt. Royal Boulevard, police Chief Jeff Gally said.

Byers said the woman told him that she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground, hitting the back of her head and knocking her unconscious.

She awoke during the assault and was able to get a good look at the man who threatened to kill her, Byers said.

The woman described her attacker as white, about 40 years old and approximately 6 feet tall. He has a stocky build but is not overweight and has what she described as piercing light-blue eyes and two sharp teeth that protrude more than his front teeth, Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent James Morton said.

She said he was unshaven, with light-colored, short hair and was wearing work boots, a dark shirt and pants that had a strong odor of grease and oil. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (412) 492-2222, ext. 418.

Police do not believe the rape is connected to a series of assaults against women that occurred in the fall of 2001 in the North Hills. Ross police charged one man in the attacks and McCandless police charged another. The attacks in Shaler, in which women fought off their assailant, remain unsolved.
