The home video release of the Oscar-nominated movie "Ray" took in an estimated $44 million in its first day in release, The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.

Citing industry sources, the paper said "Ray" sold more than 2 million combined DVD and VHS units Tuesday. Estimates on rental spending will not be made available until next week.

The movie biography of Ray Charles is up for six Academy awards -- including best picture, best actor for Jamie Foxx and best director for Taylor Hackford. Foxx won a Golden Globe last month for best actor in a musical or comedy movie.
