Allegheny County homeowners are receiving survey cards in the mail to help county officials start the property value reassessment, said county Manager Jim Flynn.
Property owners are supposed to verify the information on the cards “including the size and number of rooms in their home” or report changes, and send them back to the county within 10 days.
The county has been ordered to reassess all property values to create a fairer property tax distribution, and its assessors need this data to start that process, Flynn said. County officials have mailed 234,000 surveys so far. There will be about 570,000 in all, including 60,000 for commercial properties.
County officials told Common Pleas Senior Judge R. Stanton Wettick on Thursday they are on time to finish reassessing by the court-ordered 2012 deadline.
County officials have created a Web site for frequently asked questions about the mailers, www.alleghenycounty.us/opa/DataCollection.pdf . Other questions can be directed to the Office of Property Assessments public information line, 412-350-4600.
