The race was Friday at Lernerville Speedway, and it wasn't just on the track. Halfway through the 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model race, the rain started with Billy Moyer in the lead. Moyer can credit part of his victory to a margin of .004 seconds in the dash that gave him the pole position for the feature event and a clear path to his second victory of the season in five races.
After a 10-minute rain delay, World of Outlaws officials called the race with 25 laps completed. Moyer, of Batesville, Ark., was followed by Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., in second, 17-year old Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., was third, Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., was fourth and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresville, Tenn., rounded out the top-five.
David Scott of Garland was the top finishing Lernerville driver in 10th. Saxonburg's Alex Ferree finished 17th.
The track was in top shape the entire night. An amazing 14 drivers broke the track's one-lap Late Model record of 15.558 seconds set by Chuck Harper in June, 2004. Lanigan set the track record with a time of 15.072. Rick Eckert of York was second fastest with a 15.231. David Scott was the fastest regular Lernerville driver with a 15.549, he was also the last driver to break the old record.
In all, 44 of the 57 cars to qualify were under one second away from Lanigan's fast time. Other notables include Davey Johnson of Greensburg, 15th fastest, with a 15.571; Alex Ferree of Saxonburg in 16th with a 15.581; Kenny Schaltenbrand of Sarver, 26th, with a 15.711; John Flinner of Zelienople, 32nd with a 15.823.
Lanigan was in charge during his heat race as well. In the first heat he cruised to the victory from the pole position. He was followed by Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., in second. Moyer took the second heat followed by Rick Eckert, York. Timmy McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., winner of one WoO Late Model race at Lernerville last year took the checkered flag in the third heat. He was followed by Greensburg's Davey Johnson in second.
Kirk Ryan of Lewisburg won the fourth heat followed by Chub Frank of Bear Lake. Frank won the WoO race at Lernerville last August. Bloomquistwon heat five and Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, WISC was second. Seventeen-year old Josh Richards dominated the sixth and final heat. Richards had a lead of almost half a lap when he took the checkered flag.
The top-three cars in each heat advanced to the feature. There were three B Mains with the top two in each race advancing to the feature event. It was not like the step mains where a driver would advance from on main to the next to try and get to the feature.
The lone Lernerville provisional went to current point leader Bob Wearing Jr. or Renfrew. Donnie Moran of Dreseden, Ohio, took the first B Main followed by Mike Balzano of Parkersburg, W.Va. Lernerville regular Dave Satterlee of Home dominated the second B Main and was followed by Jeremy Miller of Littletown in second. Mike Blose of New Bethlehem won the third B Main and Keith Barbara of South Park claimed the final transfer spot.
