Butler County man shot by trooper
A Butler County man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after he was shot by a state trooper.
The man, in his 70s, was not named until his family can be notified, police said.
Police said the man barricaded himself in a house along the 100 block of Nursery Road in Renfrew just before noon.
Troopers surrounded the house and made numerous calls trying to talk to the man, said Trooper Ron Keston of the Butler state police barracks.
“He never answered,” Keston said.
Police were told by caretakers that the man was threatening to harm himself and others.
A state police special emergency response team was called.
In the late afternoon, the SERT team approached the house.
The man was outside, Keston said, and “raised his rifle and aimed at a trooper and the trooper fired. The round struck the man.”
No one else was injured.
