The 60th anniversary of the battle for Iwo Jima, which began Feb. 19, 1945, is being commemorated this week. We must never forget that 7,000 Americans lost their lives in one of the most bloody battles of World War II.

We should also never forget that on the cover of John Kerry's 1971 book, "The New Soldier," the battle of Iwo Jima is mocked by depicting the famous Iwo Jima flag-raising picture by showing the American flag upside down.

No wonder that Kerry made sure that his book was taken out of print and circulation and that 95 percent of 2004 voters did not even know of the book's existence.
