World-renowned neurosurgeon and Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee Dr. Ben Carson (with Candy) hit rock-star status Dec. 8 thanks to an enthusiastic crowd of 200-plus celebrating the Pittsburgh Carson Scholars Fund charity auction.
“Education is the great divide,” Carson said. “We're called the United States of America — it's up to us to reject the divisions of our country.”
Since its inception 11 years ago, the fund has awarded scholarships to 900 area students in grades 4 to 11 based on academic excellence and humanitarian endeavors.
“Preparing kids for the future guarantees the future,” said recipient Billy Aikins.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis (with Trameka) and Dr.Alfonso Costa hosted the event at the Andy Warhol Museum, welcoming the likes of Maria Aikins, Lauren Rushak, Jarrod Duffy, Josh Farber, Dave andLauren Murray and Don Dobroski.
Chapters of the Carson Scholars Fund seek to positively impact the nation by cultivating future leaders.
