The average age of Russians has been falling recently in a trend that researchers think is short-lived, Novosti reported Monday. Today the average age of a Russian is 37, whereas in the fall of 2002, the average age was 37.7 years, an article in Rossiiskaya Gazeta said. Demographers believe that this phenomenon is a short-term one. The head of the census and demographics department at the Russian Statistics Committee said the death rate in the country had declined a little since the end of last year. But life expectancy remains low compared to economically developed countries: 58 for men and 72 for women. These figures will grow significantly only after 2008-2010, the RSC says. © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
