Much attention has been focused on the immigrants moving from Mexico to the United States, but 1 million Americans have decided to retire in Mexico. The number of U.S. citizens living in Mexico has risen fivefold from just 10 years ago, according to the Dallas Morning News. Americans living south of the border enjoy sunny weather, low costs, lots of cultural opportunities, but there’s also Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, American-style supermarkets and shopping malls as well as baseball. In San Carlos, Mexico, one of the more expensive Mexican communities, an average house — three-bedroom, three-bath, 2,000-square foot house with a sea view and a swimming pool — sells for between $300,000 and $500,000, says Bruce Greenberg, a real estate appraiser. However, property tax on a $200,000 house may come to only about $30 a year and housekeepers can be hired for as little as $10 a day or less, according to Greenberg. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
