Prime Stage's "Our Town" may be the simplest play — at least visually — that anyone in the audience ever will see.
"Our Town" — presented by Prime Stage Theatre — has a minimalist stage setting, which consists only of a wooden platform, two tables and chairs. Meanwhile, the skilled actors and actresses — including KDKA's Jon Burnett as Doc Gibbs — portray their characters in just as minimalist a style, with body language and hand motions substituting for barely any props.
The Thornton Wilder classic, played out on stage through Sunday at the New Hazlett Theater in the North Side, draws its beauty from its surface simplicity. The story about small town life and human relationships in Grover's Corners, N.H., also narrates the uncomplicated story about everyday rituals in life and the lifelong romance of next-door neighbors, yet the themes go far deeper.
"Our Town' — a three-act play ending with a touching graveyard scene, where the ghost of deceased town residents reflect on and rue their lives — really is a story about life itself, no matter where you live. The play, good for teens and adults, leaves the audience with a message to stop and enjoy the simple moments of life.
"Our Town" will continue at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $20; $15 for senior citizens; $10 for age 18 and younger and students.
