Ringgold appoints Callaway as baseball coach

Ringgold High has a new baseball coach today.

Bill Callaway was hired by a 7-2 vote at last night's Ringgold School Board meeting.

A 1986 Belle Vernon Area High graduate, Callaway was an assistant baseball coach the last six years at Elizabeth Forward High.

'I'm really excited and looking forward to the challenge of being a head coach,' said Callaway, who played for coach Don Asmonga. 'I thought I had a shot of getting the job but I'm a little bit surprised.'

He's also been an Elizabeth Forward Middle school football coach for six years and the eighth grade Finley Middle School boys' basketball coach for seven years.

Callaway, 32, who resides in Rostraver Township, is a Ringgold High social studies teacher.

He succeeds Scott Henson, whose post was opened in June after nine years.

Henson guided the Rams to the WPIAL Class AAA championship in 1999 which was also the only season he took Ringgold to the playoffs.

The Rams went 6-8 the past season including 5-5 in Sec. 2 to finish third, two games behind Connellsville and Hempfield.

The 'no' votes came from board president Dr. Nikki Trotta and director Denise Kuhn.

'I feel Scott Henson deserved to have his job back,' said Kuhn.

'We had a perfectly good coach here who was caught in a storm,' added Trotta.
