Drummer Ringo Starr’s Liverpool, England, birthplace is not going to be razed after all. The former Beatle’s family home on Madryn Street was among 477 buildings earmarked for demolition to make way for new construction. But residents rallied against the plan and government officials agreed to tear down only 108 houses and renovate the rest, including Starr’s birthplace, the BBC reported Tuesday. Starr had opposed plans to knock down the house, where he lived for three years before his family moved. Residents opposed to the demolitions said they would have damaged the community spirit, the BBC said. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
