Riverview football coach Cappa resigns after 2 seasons

Jason Cappa confirmed Thursday he has resigned as Riverview's football coach.

His resignation is expected to be accepted by the Riverview School Board during its monthly meeting Monday.

Cappa compiled an 8-10 record in his two seasons as Riverview's coach after spending an additional seven seasons as an assistant.

His father, Jake, led Riverview to three WPIAL Class A finals between 1986-2001.

Cappa said he informed football parents and players as well as Riverview principal Tiffany Nix of his decision close to a month and a half ago. He said he officially submitted his resignation to the school board two weeks ago.

Cappa accepted a long-term substitute teaching position at Imagine Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship in November and said he expects that position to turn into a permanent position starting next school year. He said the position would have put a time constraint on his ability to coach football at Riverview full-time.

“Before my dad passed, for years and years he said, ‘Remember, coaching's not your career, teaching is.' I couldn't pass up an opportunity to teach where I'm at right now,” Cappa said. “It was one of the hardest things I had to do in my life. There's no doubt about it. Taking over a program that I grew up in and my dad was a part of, and turning the program around in two years the way that I did with my staff and players then have to walk away from that, that's very difficult.”
