Roadway cosmetics 'beggars belief'

Makeup scofflaws are the latest to be captured by Britain's network of roadside cameras that are intended to catch speeders. Donna Maddock, 22, of Mold, Wales, was fined $350 for using both hands to apply makeup while driving along a Welsh highway where accidents have killed or injured 50 people in recent years. Roadside cameras caught the woman with a mascara brush in one hand and a compact in the other. The woman, who pleaded guilty to careless driving while traveling 32 mph in a 40 mph zone, also was ordered to pay court costs and had six negative points added to her driver's license. A North Wales police spokesman told Sky News that a car is a "dangerous lump of metal" in the wrong hands. "You need to be in control at all times and Miss Maddock's actions beggars belief," the police spokesman said. © Copyright 2006 by United Press International
