NORTH APOLLO -- A would-be robber left the Honey Bear convenience store on Route 66 empty handed late Sunday night after a clerk wasn't impressed with his handgun. State police said the 23-year-old clerk, who was in the store's office talking on the phone with his boss, has recently returned from military duty overseas and didn't panic when confronted by the man with what he thought looked like a toy. "He was actually pretty calm and collected," Trooper Patrick Ciriello said. The clerk told his boss, "I can't believe we're being robbed right now," as the man demanded money. When the clerk said he didn't believe the man had a real gun, the would-be robber ran from the store and fled the area on foot, Ciriello said. "He didn't even get a candy bar," the trooper said. One customer was in the store. Ciriello said the would-be robber could be a local person because he knew to show up just minutes before the store was scheduled to close at midnight. The customer was waiting to check out near the register and appears wearing a hooded sweatshirt in surveillance video that also shows the suspect, police said. Additional Information:

Police seek tips

A surveillance video doesn't show the suspect's face, but did help police develop this description: He's a white man from 5 foot 8 inches to 6 feet tall. He looks to be from 19 and 25 years old. During the robbery attempt, the man was wearing a dark blue ski mask, dark blue hooded sweatshirt, dark blue or black jeans and dark blue or black sneakers. Anyone with information about the suspect should call state police in Kittanning at 724-543-2011.
