The giant screen at Robinson's Twin Hi-Way Drive-In has shown its last film.

Operators of the popular outdoor theater on Steubenville Pike announced via Facebook that the business closed — not an unexpected move given approval last year for a Sheetz convenience store to be built on part of the 48-acre site.

“It is with great sadness that we make this final post,” a message posted Tuesday night on the theater's Facebook page read. “Due to many circumstances far, far beyond our control, the Twin Hi-Way Drive-In has closed its doors.”

Neither theater owner Jerry Salnoris nor property owner John Butya could be reached for comment.

About 300 comments were posted in response through Wednesday, many from fans lamenting the loss of another drive-in.

“My husband and I had so many dates at The Twin Highway (sic),” one woman wrote.

First opened in 1950, the Twin Hi-Way closed for 13 years before reopening in 2007.

Western Pennsylvania was home to about 150 drive-in theaters during their peak popularity in the late 1950s. Allegheny County's only other drive-in is The Dependable in Moon.
