Let's see - shall it be traditional potato and cheese, along with a few sauerkraut ones, or what about a batch of those little scrumptious Polish pillows of dough filled with something unusual, such as spinach and feta cheese - Greek-style?
Or broccoli, potato and cheese - baked-potato style, but so much better than the fast-food version?
Don't stop now. Spinach. Mushroom and onion. Cottage cheese and chives.
Sweet cabbage. Levkar (prune). Even jalapeno, potato and cheese for kicks, or try a Renogie, a deep-fried breaded pierogi that comes filled with mushroom and onion, jalapeno, or potato and cheese stuffing, sort of a samosa-gone-Eastern European.
These and other goodies are waiting at neat-and-clean Rosie's Pierogies in Plum. The carryout-only shop is nestled in a small strip shopping center along Route 286 near the Allegheny-Westmoreland county line. You can order items hot and ready to eat - if you can't wait until you get home, the staff will provide plastic utensils and napkins for on-the-road noshing - or purchase quantities of the homemade pierogies frozen and ready to cook for dinner or to hoard for the next big snowstorm.
Owner Bob Renock says his best sellers are the bacon-and-cheese variety. No. 2 is bacon, potato and cheese.
A Sampler Dozen - three each of potato and cheese; sauerkraut; bacon, potato and cheese; and jalapeno, potato and cheese - served with melted butter and fried onions, costs $6.75 - add 50 cents for sour cream.
Or, Rosie's can cook up sweet cottage cheese; kraut and kielbasa; kraut and bacon; plain mashed potato; garlic mashed potato; kraut and mushroom; potato and cottage cheese; spinach and Parmesan cheese; and mushroom-and-onion to order if you call or fax ahead. A half-dozen, depending on the variety, is $3.75 or $3.90.
But wait! No need to eat merely pierogies. Team them with a Bratwurst or Kielbasa Sandwich ($3.50 each), loaded with sauerkraut for 50 cents more. And dip into Cole Slaw ($1.10 for a half-pint) or the ultimate Pittsburgh comfort food - Slovakian Haluski (cabbage and noodles). A small (small?) serving is $1.75; a large (that's more like it!) goes for $3.25 and reheats well in the microwave, as do the cooked pierogies, served in a cute Chinese restaurant container.
A Rosie's Dinner, consisting of three pierogies, haluski or cole slaw, and kolbassi or bratwurst, is $4.75, and betcha you can't eat it all. The Tuesday and Thursday night special is Stuffed Cabbage at $1.75 per piece. Make it a dinner for $4.75 with one cabbage roll, haluski or cole slaw and three pierogies for a Sunday night dinner you can't beat in the middle of the week.
Having a party⢠It's Rosie's to the rescue with large quantities for communions, graduations, family reunions, company picnics and showers. If you buy a dozen frozen pierogies, you get a $2 discount. Plus, no more assembly lines in your kitchen, toiling over tearing dough - just boil, fry, serve and relax.
Rosie's is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. You can fax your order to (724) 387-2818.
