Roundup: Rochester stifles South Side Beaver

Top-ranked Rochester held the WPIAL's leading rusher, James Kazil, to 45 yards in a 22-0 Class A Big Seven Conference victory over No. 7 South Side Beaver.

Brent Whiteleather carried the ball 15 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns for Rochester (4-0, 2-0), while teammate Myke Wells had 20 carries for 115 yards and a score.

Rochester held South Side Beaver (3-1, 1-1) to 101 total yards.

  • Wilkinsburg 34, Brentwood 28 -- Jonathan Hughes caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Nelson in overtime to lift No. 8 Wilkinsburg (3-1, 2-0) over visiting Brentwood (1-3, 0-2) in a Class A Eastern Conference game. Hughes also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Nelson and scored on a 44-yard touchdown run for the Tigers. Nelson completed 6 of 8 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns and Ray Coleman carried the ball 14 times for 126 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, for Wilkinsburg.

    Mark Jones intercepted Brentwood quarterback Andy Lauterbach in overtime to set up the Tigers' winning touchdown.

  • Riverview 21, Duquesne 13 - - Host Riverview bolted to a 21-0 lead and held on to defeat No. 5 Duquesne in an Eastern Conference upset.

    Riverview's Andrew Ardestani rushed for 140 yards on 22 carries, and scored on a 17-yard touchdown run with 1:56 to play in the third quarter to give the Raiders a 21-0 lead. Duquesne fought back on Thomas Young's 10-yard fumble return for a touchdown and Corey Gibson's 26-yard pass from Shawntez Bryant. But Ardestani intercepted a pass in the end zone with two seconds to play to preserve the win.

    Duquesne fell to 0-2 in the Eastern Conference, 2-2 overall.

  • Carrick 20, Westinghouse 0 -- Senior running back Lenny Wicks rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries to push Carrick past Westinghouse (0-4) in City League action.

    Wicks, the younger brother of former Perry star Eric Wicks, scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter and a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

  • Bethel Park 28, Shaler 21 -- No. 7 Bethel Park raced to a 28-0 lead and held off Shaler (1-1, 2-2) in a Quad North game. Bethel Park (4-0, 2-0) is tied with Mt. Lebanon for first place in the conference.

  • Western Beaver 33, Avonworth 12 -- Warren Taylor scored on touchdown runs of 55 and 75 to propel Western Beaver (3-1, 1-0) past Avonworth in a Big Seven game. He also caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jon D'Angelo.

  • Deer Lakes 33, Shady Side Academy 13 -- Deer Lakes (1-3, 1-1) scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as coach Denny Fedigan earned his first victory with the Lancers in an Allegheny Conference game.

    Matt Jones rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries. Bob Smith passed for 123 yards, ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception 80 yards with 1:42 to play to seal the win.

    Shady Side Academy fell to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in the conference.
