Roundup: USC wins Las Vegas tourney
LAS VEGAS – Junior guard Dale Meinbrese scored a game-high 24 points, and Tournament MVP Marques Johnson added 15, as WPIAL Quad A No. 3 Upper St. Clair defeated Mojave (Nev.), 61-53, to win the Bronze Division at the 25th annual Powerade Holiday Prep Classic.
Upper St. Clair (12-0) made 16 of 22 free throws in the second half to hold off Mojave (11-2), ranked No. 7 in the state among Nevada’s largest schools.
In the semifinals, Johnson, a senior forward, scored a game-high 28 points, as Upper St. Clair (12-0) came from behind to defeat Carson (Nev.), 71-60.
Johnson hit 6 of 9 from 3-point range to lead Upper St. Clair back from a 28-17 first-half deficit.
Upper St. Clair opened the second half on a 7-0 run and led the rest of the game.
“To win our last two games against two of the best teams in the state of Nevada is extremely exciting,” coach Danny Holzer said.
Meinbrese, who also was named to the all-tournament team, added 16 points, senior guard George Geyer had 13 points and five assists and junior forward Andrew Atman had eight points and 14 rebounds for USC.
Ryan Henry had 14 points and four rebounds to pace Carson (10-3).
Junior forward Chris Williams had 13 points to pace the Wolverines.
James Hairston scored a game-high 18 points for Connellsville (4-5).
Bryan Teschke scored 19 points for Fox Chapel (5-5).
Caitlin Ward scored 13 points to pace the host Hampton (6-2).
Carlynton’s Kristen Bonner had four 3-pointers to reach 292 for her career and move into the top 10 all-time in the nation.
Trailing 17-14, Kiski Area (6-0) got a 53-second pin from Steve Carney at 152 pounds to start the comeback.
Shawn Loughlin (103), Mike Corcetti (171) and heavyweight Kyle Graham also had pins for Kiski Area.
Burrell fell to 3-1.
