Roundup: Western Beaver stuns No. 1 Rochester
Warren Taylor and Western Beaver ran all over top-ranked Rochester.
Taylor, a junior running back, ran for 296 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, as the Golden Beavers (4-1, 2-0) upset defending state champion Rochester, 18-8, in a Big Seven Conference game.
After Tyler Stiffey’s 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave Western Beaver a 6-0 lead, Taylor scored on touchdown runs of 70 and 67 yards to put the Golden Beaver ahead 18-2 in the fourth quarter. Taylor has rushed for 844 yards and 10 touchdowns on 76 carries through the first five games of the season.
The Rams (4-1, 2-1) responded with a late touchdown on quarterback Dan Helbig’s 57-yard pass to Mike Iannini, but it was not enough. Jordan Glenn registered a safety for Rochester when he tackled Matt Weiss in the end zone early in the fourth quarter.
Clairton 14, Riverview 7 — Deron Ford took his only carry of the game 66 yards for a touchdown and Bradley Dawkins recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, as No. 3 Clairton (5-0, 3-0) overcame five turnovers and edged visiting Riverview (2-3, 1-2). The Raiders, who turned the ball over twice, scored on C.J. Peters’ 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for their only points of the game.
Monessen 36, California 0 – Unbeaten Monessen rode Quinton Martin’s three touchdowns, including two on long runs, to a victory over California Area in a WPIAL Class A Tri-County South Conference game Friday night.
Monessen, ranked No. 2 in the Tribune-Review Coaches’ Poll, improved its record to 5-0 (3-0 in the conference).
Martin scored on a runs of 5, 80 and 79 yards and Mike Blainefield returned a punt 57 yards for another score for the Greyhounds.
California Area’s record dipped to 2-3 (1-2 in the conference).
Carmichaels Area 20, Mapletown 7 — Don Hewitt rushed for 187 yards on 37 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 4, 30 and 5 yards to lead No. 6 Carmichaels (5-0, 3-0) past Mapletown (2-3, 1-2) in a Tri-County South Conference game.
Jefferson-Morgan 6, Frazier 0 — Jimmy Basilone threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Matt Ferenchak in the first quarter for the game’s only score as Jefferson-Morgan (3-2, 3-0) beat Frazier (1-4, 0-3) in a Tri-County South Conference game.
West Greene 12, Geibel 7 — A.J. Wilson threw for two touchdowns, including a 42-yard strike to Jamie Wilson in the third quarter, to lift West Greene (2-3, 1-2) over Geibel (0-5, 0-3) in a Tri-County South game.
Bentworth 19, Avella 14 — Dan Wytovich caught two touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead Bentworth (1-4, 1-3) to its first victory, a Black Hills Conference win over Avella (1-4, 1-2). Wytovich scored on a 53-yarder from Travis Harff and a 36-yarder from Lloyd Williamson.
Beth-Center 44, Fort Cherry 8 — Mike Morgan scored on runs of 13 and 54 yards to lead Beth-Center (3-2, 1-2) past Fort Cherry (0-5, 0-3) in a Black Hills Conference game.
Brentwood 35, Leechburg 14 — Andy Lauterbach threw three touchdown passes — two to E.J. Warner — to lead Brentwood (2-3, 1-2) over Leechburg (2-3, 1-2) in an Eastern Conference game. The two hooked up on 14- and 15-yard scoring plays. The other was an 8-yarder from Lauterbach to Da Von Moore.
