Tuesday, manager John Russell reiterated that left-hander Paul Maholm is healthy. Winless in his past six starts, Maholm raised his ERA to 4.11 by allowing seven runs in four innings Monday.
"I'm not worried about it," Russell said. "He's going through a little bit of a inconsistent time, (but) he'll figure it out."
• Catcher Ryan Doumit will have a CT scan of his fractured right wrist Thursday in Pittsburgh. If all goes well, he could soon resume baseball-related workouts. However, he might not be back for another seven weeks.
"We're going to be ultra-conservative with (the rehab)," general manager Neal Huntington said. "I know Ryan doesn't want to hear that, but we're going to have to rein him in."
• Craig Hansen (neck spasms) was slated to have medical tests done yesterday in Pittsburgh. The results likely will be available today.
• There are no Pirates among the leaders at any position for the National League squad in early results of balloting for the All-Star Game, which will be played July 14 in St. Louis. Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is the top NL vote-getter (842,058 votes).
•Bill Mazeroski and Bill Virdon will represent the Pirates at the first-year player draft June 9 in Secaucus, N.J. Maz will be one of four Hall of Famers at the event. The first round will be broadcast live on MLB Network.
• With a double, single and homer by the fourth inning Monday, Freddy Sanchez had three at-bats to try to get a triple for the cycle.
"That was the last thing on my mind," Sanchez said, smiling. "You can't be picky."
• Yesterday, the Cubs were without hard-throwing reliever Carlos Marmol for the second game in a row. He was in New York for the birth of his child.
