Sacrament, not style

It is very sad that the Trib chose to emphasize the cost and style of clothing worn for First Communion, as opposed to the real reason for the occasion, in the Living story “Saying yes to the First Communion dress” (May 3 and TribLIVE.com).

Yes, this sacrament is a right of passage for all Catholic girls, regardless of financial status or looks. This type of coverage fuels the flames of bullying and cruelty that are running rampant in the schools today. The Trib is sending the message that this type of shallow, superficial behavior is acceptable.

Any girl who tells her mother that she refuses to wear a First Communion dress because it doesn't have a designer label should be in the confessional, praying for her soul, not marching up the aisle to be presented to Christ.
