Washington County homeowners are being victimized by home repair scam artists who point out work that they say is needed, ask for a down-payment to buy materials and then disappear before the job is finished.

North Franklin Township police Chief Mark Kavakich said 30 cases countywide have been reported this year, five of them recently in his township.

Police are doing background investigations of suspicious contractors, Kavakich said.

Washington city police are aware of two home repair scam attempts so far this year, police Lt. Robert Redlinger said.

Since Tuesday, two homeowners have reported to police that two men posing as contractors offered to repair their roofs, then asked for money to buy materials.

Police believe the same two men were involved in both incidents, and are continuing to investigate. ,

"When people start asking for up front money, it's a red flag — you better watch," Redlinger said. "Reputable guys don't do that."

Kavakich urged people who have questions about someone at their door to call 911, or in North Franklin call police at (724) 228-9610. Washington city residents reporting home repair scam artists can call (724) 229-4600.
