George Rozman started his job as a custodian in the North Hills School District late in life, but it didn’t stop him from making a lasting impression on the children there. Wherever he traveled, former students would say “Hi, Mr. Rozman,” recalled his daughter Sandy Behr. He didn’t always remember their names, but he loved the job and being a part of the students’ lives. George W. Rozman, of West View, Allegheny County, died of congestive heart failure Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Vincentian Nursing Home. He was 89. “He loved being around all of the people, and he just loved being with the kids,” Behr said. “And he was a good cleaner. They loved my dad because they knew he was the one person who moved the desks and cleaned under them. He was a proud man. Anything he did, he did right.” Mr. Rozman was born Oct. 26, 1913, to Joseph Rozman and Antonette Kusturin. One of seven children, Mr. Rozman left school after sixth grade to work in the coal mines to help earn extra money for his family. Mr. Rozman later joined the Army and served in World War II as a radar technician in Africa and Europe. After he returned, he met his future wife, Felicita DiDomenicus, at a policemen’s ball. They later married and had two daughters. “We didn’t have a lot of money, but we never had to do without,” Sandy Behr said. “He always made sure my sister and I had what we needed.” Son-in-law Jim Behr said the Rozman family was close-knit and made him feel welcome. “They are one of those families who had everyone over at their house every Sunday,” he said. Mr. Rozman worked at Crucible Steel and later at Golden Anderson Valves as a pipe fitter. When the company moved from the area in the early 1970s, Mr. Rozman, then almost 60, found himself without a job. Instead of retiring, he went to work at the school district. “He was upset that he had lost his job, but he was a very determined man,” Sandy Behr said. “He did anything he could to find a job and he didn’t retire until he was 70.” An avid gardener and walker, Mr. Rozman also was a member of the VFW Post 2754 in West View. Mr. Rozman is survived by his wife, Felicita (DiDomenicus) Rozman; daughters Sandy Behr and husband, Jim, of Ohio Township, Allegheny County, and Judy Donatelli and husband, Roy, of West View; granddaughters Natalie Abel and Dana Donatelli; and great grandsons Zachary and Vincent Abel. He was preceded in death by sisters Kathryn Cavrak, Mary Tratnik and Mildred Shelleby and brothers Mike, Steve and Joseph Rozman. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Schellhaas Funeral Home Inc., 388 Center Ave., West View. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Athanasius Church with the Rev. Robert Norton and the Rev. John Forbidussi officiating. Interment will follow in Allegheny County Memorial Park.
