Several children reportedly suffered minor injuries when a school minibus and a privately owned minivan collided in East Huntingdon Thursday morning.
State police in Greensburg and several fire departments responded to the accident involving a minibus headed to Southmoreland Elementary School and a private school.
The accident happened about 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Water Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, near Scottdale Lumber.
Police said the crash occurred when the unidentified school bus driver swerved to avoid another driver and collided with the minivan, carrying a driver and two children.
“Three students in the bus were headed to Southmoreland Elementary School and two were headed to St. John the Baptist School. It's my understanding (that) some of the mothers met their children at the school and decided to take them to the hospital as a precaution,” Southmoreland Superintendent John Molnar said.
At least two children in car seats in the private van were treated at the scene and then reportedly taken to an unknown hospital.
St. John The Baptist Catholic School Principal Joseph Dreliszak said two of the school's students were taken to Excela Frick Hospital and were treated and released.
“They were happy to be able to go home and Mom and Dad were there,” Dreliszak said. “They're fine.”
