Schreiber Processing recalls chicken

Schreiber Processing Corp., of Maspeth, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling 5,760 pounds of chicken products that may be contaminated with Listeria.

U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Monday that the products were produced Aug. 10, 2004, to Dec. 5, 2004, and were distributed to retail stores in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The recalled products are:

-- 48 oz. boxes of "EMPIRE KOSHER, Fully Cooked, BUFFALO STYLE WINGS," bearing the date code "1444."

-- 28 oz. boxes of "EMPIRE KOSHER, FULLY COOKED, BREADED, FRIED CHICKEN," bearing the date code "0274."

The problem was discovered through microbiological sampling, no reports of illnesses have been made.

Listeria can cause listeriosis that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea as well as miscarriages and stillbirths.
