The University of Michigan Integrative Medicine Clinical Services has unveiled a "Healing Foods Pyramid," emphasizing foods known to have healing benefits.

The pyramid begins with a foundation of water, then builds with fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats, dairy, eggs, lean meats, fish and seafood, seasonings, onions, and garlic. The pyramid then lists accompaniments, including alcohol, dark chocolate and tea. The final spot on the pyramid is left blank for users to add their own addition healing foods.

The pyramid lists daily, weekly and optional choices that can be altered to accommodate people with special dietary needs. An interactive Web-based version allows users to click on a category to read guidelines and specific facts regarding serving sizes, recommended frequency of consumption, information about the health benefits, and other concerns.

UMIMCS researchers developed the pyramid based on findings from several studies. They encourage people to use the Healing Foods Pyramid guidelines as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle that integrates mind, body, spirit, and emotion.
