Island Sports Dome
Robert Morris University Island Sports Dome was the meeting place for more than 200 Girl Scouts on May 9. As a Scout overnight event, the program rotation consisted of a movie, ice skating, miniature golf, a campfire, and smorgasbord of indoor dome activities such as soccer, volleyball, La Crosse, basketball, football, Twister, golf, etc. Hotdogs and Smores were made at the campfire. The movie "Snow Buddies" was shown on the wall of the dome before lights out. Patches were available for all participants and RMU Pro Shop merchandise and the Bistro.
This has been the third year for this program which is extended to Brownies, Junior Cadette, and Senior Scouts, and also includes Boy Scouts and Venture Crews.
This year there were more than 400 Brownies in attendance, 300 Boy Scouts, and 200 older Girl Scouts. The program coordinator schedules activities as they relate the Scouting handbook requirements.
Girls from Ford City Cadette Troop 5 attended and look forward to the next program in the fall. Brownies are scheduled for Nov. 14 and Junior, Cadette, and Seniors for Nov. 21.
Butler Family Bowlaway
Junior Troop 902 led by Stacia Boguslawski and Troop 5 Cadettes led by Denise Russick attended the Butler Family Bowlaway on May 16. The event was previously scheduled for Feb. 29, but due to inclement weather was rescheduled. Keystone Tall Tree Girl Scout Council sponsored the event and the owners of the Butler Family Bowlaway worked with the troops to reschedule the event.
It consisted of six hours of all night bowling, laser tag, beverages, popcorn, pizza, hot pockets, and Dippin' Dots. The Junior girls scored big on Deal or No Deal and other arcade games racking in more than 3,000 tickets. Paige Wood rolled more than 11 strikes and Brittany Smail lost the ball once. During the various team recruits and side changes in laser tag, Wood was the MVP at five of nine games played.
During the summer the scout troops campout, participate in parades, attend district camps, and attend Idlewild Family Scout Day. Anyone who is in first grade may join Scouts. Troop 5 summer activities include high adventure course with the climbing wall and zip line, camp outs, cooking, horseback riding, canoeing, biking, float making for the parade, and flag retirement.
Juniors (grades three-five) will be in the Ford City parade, Franklin Scout Camp with a variety of camping activities, flag retirement, and a Naturalization ceremony at the Federal Building in Pittsburgh.
