Larry Thompson is running for Butler County commissioner.

A former Butler County jury commissioner said Monday he’s running for county commissioner.

Larry Thompson, 61, of Oakland, Butler County is seeking the Republican nomination. In a statement released Monday, Thompson said, “The county commissioners are the elected CEOs of Butler County and are expected to govern themselves accordingly.”

Thompson retired from Armco/AK Steel Butler Works in January 2010 with 31 years of service. He worked in the inspection and metallurgy departments for 26 years there, according to the statement.

Thompson became a Butler County jury commissioner in 2010. He resigned in 2012 to become first deputy in the Register of Wills/Orphan’s Court office, and retired from that post in April.

County residents will elect three commissioners next November.

In June, Democrat Kevin Boozel of Mercer in Butler County announced he’s running.
