Shaler man charged in Pitt bookstore crash

A judge on Sunday set bail at $100,000 for a Shaler man accused of crashing a sport-utility vehicle into the University of Pittsburgh's bookstore in Oakland and injuring three people Saturday night.

Pittsburgh police charged Nicholas Bozzo, 21, with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury and other counts, court records show.

The crash happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Fifth Avenue when the SUV Bozzo was driving struck another vehicle, then the University Store.

Medics took three patients — two pedestrians and the driver of the vehicle that was struck — to UPMC Presbyterian with minor injuries. The crash destroyed about 15 feet of metal fencing along Fifth Avenue and damaged the bookstore's front window, according to a criminal complaint.

Bozzo fled on foot but was returned to the scene by his father. Bozzo remained at the Allegheny County Jail as of Sunday night, according to court records.

The bookstore was open for its regular hours Sunday, according to the store's Twitter page.
