A British poll ranks "The Shawshank Redemption," starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, as the best film never to win an Oscar.

Approximately 6,000 people voted in the Radio Times Guide to Films survey for movies failing to take home Oscars in major categories, including best film, best actor and best actress, BBC reported Wednesday.

"Shawshank Redemption" director Frank Darabont said he was "truly blown away" by the recognition.

"Making this most meaningful is the fact that it's voted for by those whose opinions count most -- the audience," he said.

"It's A Wonderful Life" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" ranked second and third in the poll.

Rounding out the Top 10 were:

No. 4: "2001: A Space Odyssey";

No. 5: "The Great Escape";

No. 6: "The Wizard of Oz";

No. 7: "Some Like It Hot";

No. 8: The Color Purple";

No. 9: "Raiders of the Lost Ark"; and

No. 10: "Psycho."
